Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO)
Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO) provides superior educational and career programs to young people from underserved and underrepresented communities to maximize their opportunities for college and career success.
Essay Intensive partners with Sponsors for Education Opportunity Scholars Program as college essay writing consultant. We train their college essay writing coaches to draw out the students’ best stories in the best words help their scholars write the essay of their lives.
SEO students are devoted to improving their circumstances–and those of their communities and families– as are the diverse staff who serve them. The “maximizing” of their mission is no joke, as SEO continues to grow relentlessly. Check their good work out here.
Brooklyn Youth Sports Club
Brooklyn Youth Sports Club’s Mission (and excellent fragment usage!): To enable and support inner-city Brooklyn youth to accomplish their goal of college enrollment. To use basketball as the vehicle to engage student-athletes to achieve academic excellence. To instill values of perseverance, self esteem, integrity, and hard work and empower student-athletes to be leaders on and off the court.
Essay Intensive partners with Brooklyn Youth Sports Club to offer their teen athletes unorthodox writing workshops (This spring was “Just Write: Word Up”, an exploration of personal narrative for juniors) that inspire them to write the stories they carry and all they witness in compelling and revelatory ways. Sara was especially proud to be able to hold a plank for longer than any of their teen athletes, and to learn from them current teen-only vocabulary.
Essay Intensive programs for their middle school cohort, Nike’s Better Athlete Coalition, will be launched this fall. BKYSC is at its heart a family organization– all hands on deck. Their work is a labor and lay-up after lay-up of love. Check them out here.
The TEAK Fellowship
The TEAK Fellowship helps talented New York City students from low-income families gain admission to and succeed at top high schools and colleges. Along with academic support, TEAK provides leadership training, exposure to the arts and outdoors, mentoring, career experience, and assistance with the high school and college application processes.
Essay Intensive partners with TEAK Fellowship to offer their seniors a “Write Your Way” workshop to launch their critical process of evaluating their life experiences, generating compelling content, and sweating out the stress with good muscular fun. We help develop their emerging essays as-needed.
Sara teaches their middle school students the art of personal narratives, living proof that by 7th grade, you can have as much wisdom and street-smarts as an old buddha. And since you didn’t ask (but everyone else did), “TEAK” is not an acronym– it’s just a ‘nym’! Check them out here.
The Children’s Aid Society
This year Essay Intensive was thrilled to offer a pro-bono “Introduction to the College Essay–Your Chance to Speak Your Mind!” workshop as part of The Children’s Aid Society’s college application kick-off. We received from the students (along with writing) smirks of appreciation, subtle teeth-sucking (it’s how your stamina gets tested by certain adolescents), and genuine insights. We can’t wait to work with Children’s Aid Society again and get those powerful stories out in the world to change lives (yep– we said it!). Haven’t heard of them? Where you been for the last 150++ years? Check them out here.
